Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF)
- What it is: Solid natural wood from trees like Cherry, maple, Oak, birch, etc.
- Typical use: High-end cabinets and furniture frames.
- Pros: Strong, durable, long-lasting, can be refinished.
- Cons: Expensive; can warp with moisture if not treated.
Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF)
- What it is: Wood fibers + wax + resin compressed into dense sheets.
- Pros: Smooth surface ideal for painting, stable, affordable.
- Cons: Not moisture-resistant unless sealed; heavy; can sag under load.
Cabinet construction and craftsmanship
Soft Close – This feature uses specially designed hinges that prevent drawers and cabinets from slamming shut. Instead, they close gently and quietly.
Dovetail Construction – This refers to assembling a cabinet or drawer using dovetail joints. These joints are shaped like a trapezoid—wider at the top—and interlock like the teeth of a zipper, creating a strong, durable connection.
Full Extension Drawers – To cut costs, some manufacturers make drawers shorter than the full depth of the cabinet box. Drawers that extend to the full depth of the cabinet and use hardware that allows them to pull out completely are known as full extension drawers.

Custom vs. standard cabinets
Standard Cabinet Sizes
- Wall cabinets: 30", 36", or 42" tall
- Base cabinets: 34.5" tall
- Utility (tall) cabinets: 84", 90", or 96" tall and typically 24" deep
- Width: Produced in standard increments
- Base cabinets usually include one or two top drawers
- One or two lower doors with adjustable shelves
- Anything beyond common dimensions or features is considered custom or semi-custom, increasing cost.
- Wood hardness and rarity significantly influence pricing.
- Harder woods resist wear and denting better.
- Common cabinet wood species include: Cherry, Maple, Alder, Hickory, Red Oak, White Oak, Chestnut, and Birch

We couldn't be happier with using Gideon Cabinetry for our kitchen remodel. Shirley made the process incredibly easy and we are in love with our new countertops - they came out better than we could have imagined. Shirley answered all of our questions right away and went above and beyond to ensure we got the look we wanted. Thank you Shirley! Gideon Cabinetry has done an outstanding job helping my mother, mother in law, and also myself with cabinets and countertops. The professionalism, honesty, competitive pricing, and the outstanding options to chose from has made our family use them throughout the years. I recommend Gideon Cabinetry to everyone. Outstanding results from start to finish. Shirley was an absolute pleasure to work with!!! She met me at my house, did all the measurements, went over various high quality cabinet options and colors with me and provided a computer generated rendering for me to review that same evening. Shirley was very professional and personable throughout the entire process. I’m so glad I chose Gideon Cabinetry to renovate my kitchen! My kitchen is now more appealing and more functional! The design was exactly what I was looking for and the cabinets are great quality (and worth every penny). Thank you Gideon Cabinetry - I love my new Kitchen!!! Shirley and Claudia have been very attentive in our design efforts, remodeling three kitchens together. They provided me a variety of options for cabinetry depending on the price range we were looking at, ideas for styling, and rendering for new designs. They always respond promptly to any of my questions, which has been extremely helpful. I definitely recommend the Gideon team. |
