Cabinet materials
- Hardwood - With all plywood boxes, wood frames and inside shelves.
- Medium-Density Fiberboard or MDF - Made of wood fibers that have been broken down into residuals then mixed with wax and resins and heat pressed into dense sheets.
- Particle Board - This is made of wood shavings, flakes, chips, sawdust, strands, stivers, and wood wool, pressed and bonded together.
- Wood Veneer - Is a thin slice of natural wood that is attached onto a panel of fiberboard or particle board to cover them up.
- Fiberboard - This is an engineered wood, made of chips, plant fibers, flakes, sawdust, and other recycled materials such as cardboard and paper all bonded with s synthetic resin under high pressure, heated and compacted into rigid sheets.
Cabinet construction and craftsmanship
- Soft Close - With specially designed hinges, they allow drawers and cabinets to not slam shut, and instead they close slowly and silently.
- Dovetail Construction - It refers to the process of putting together a cabinet or drawer with dovetail joints. Dovetail joints are trapezoidal in shape, like a rectangle that widens towards the top, resembling a zipper.
- Full Extension Drawers - Another feature modified by manufacturers to keep lower cost is making drawers smaller than the full depth of the cabinet box. Drawers that are constructed to meet the size of the cabinet boxes and the hardware they come with are called full extension drawers.
Custom vs. standard cabinets
Most cabinets lines come in standard sizes - wall cabinets come in 30”, 36”, 42” height. Base cabinets 34.5” tall, and utility cabinets are 84” 90” 96” tall and 24” deep. Cabinet width also comes in standard sizes. Base cabinets have standard features, one or two drawers on the top, and one or two doors that swing open on the bottom with adjustable shelves. Anything other than that would be considered custom or semi-custom and will increase the price you pay.
Type of wood
The level of wood hardness and rarity will also determine the price you pay. A harder wood species will be more resistant to wear and denting. Some of the wood species used for cabinets are:
Cherry, Maple, Alder, Hickory, Red Oak, White Oak, Chestnut, and Birch wood.

Cabinet features and upgrades
There are many alternative upgrades when it comes to functionality. Base cabinets with wood or plastic spin, roll out spice racks, roll out cooking sheet organizers, roll out trays for pots and pans, single roll out trays for easy access, glass door cabinets, microwave cabinets, single or double oven cabinets, etc. These are all considered specialty cabinets and are upgrades affecting the price you pay.

We couldn't be happier with using Gideon Cabinetry for our kitchen remodel. Shirley made the process incredibly easy and we are in love with our new countertops - they came out better than we could have imagined. Shirley answered all of our questions right away and went above and beyond to ensure we got the look we wanted. Thank you Shirley! Gideon Cabinetry has done an outstanding job helping my mother, mother in law, and also myself with cabinets and countertops. The professionalism, honesty, competitive pricing, and the outstanding options to chose from has made our family use them throughout the years. I recommend Gideon Cabinetry to everyone. Outstanding results from start to finish. Shirley was an absolute pleasure to work with!!! She met me at my house, did all the measurements, went over various high quality cabinet options and colors with me and provided a computer generated rendering for me to review that same evening. Shirley was very professional and personable throughout the entire process. I’m so glad I chose Gideon Cabinetry to renovate my kitchen! My kitchen is now more appealing and more functional! The design was exactly what I was looking for and the cabinets are great quality (and worth every penny). Thank you Gideon Cabinetry - I love my new Kitchen!!! Shirley and Claudia have been very attentive in our design efforts, remodeling three kitchens together. They provided me a variety of options for cabinetry depending on the price range we were looking at, ideas for styling, and rendering for new designs. They always respond promptly to any of my questions, which has been extremely helpful. I definitely recommend the Gideon team. |
